Maria Shell: Game Of Improv
Improv piecing is a method of creating that involves work, chance, technique, exploration, and tenacity. We are going to explore all of these things within the perimeters of a game. Roll the dice, spin the wheel, pick your category. This workshop is a full exploration of letting go of expectations and embracing the unknown.
Maria Shell’s work is grounded in the tradition and craft of American quilt-making. She strives to take the classical components of a traditional bedquilt and manipulate them to create surprising combinations of pattern, repetition, and color for the viewer. Maria is the recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 Winter Award, a Rasmuson Foundation Project Award (2009), and two Rasmuson Fellowships (2013, 2017). She has had several solo and small group shows including The Pieced Canvas at the Visions Art Museum in San Diego, California, and OFF the Grid at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. Her first book Improv Patchwork—Dynamic Quilts Made with Line & Shape was published in 2017. Requirements:
This is a recommended supply list, if you don't have the EXACT ruler or supplies please
don't stress about it. We will make it work! What is important is not the supplies, it is
showing up and having a willingness to experiment with patchwork. That said, the
book Improv Patchwork is highly recommended - Available at STITH
*Improv Patchwork: Dynamic Quilts Made with Line & Shape by Maria Shell
*Sewing machine with a straight stitch and a quarter-inch foot and/or the ability to
create a quarter inch seam. (A quarter-inch foot with a flange will NOT work for
sewing curves.)
*Rotary Cutter with a sharp new blade - Olfa 60MM Straight Handle Rotary Cutter
*Rotary rulers (bring your basic longer ruler, my favorite is 4" x 14"
*Optional Rulers - Tri-Rec Ruler and Companion Angle Ruler if you have them. Or any triangle ruler that you have on hand and want to explore using. Do not buy new rulers, but if you have these rulers, round them up!
*Rotary Mat
*Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper, neutral thread, scissors,
and snips
*Measuring tape
*Small sticky note pad
*Paper and/or notebook and/or draft paper for making notes, sketches, and drawings
about your quilt.
*Calculator
*Design wall (a large piece of flannel or batting works fine)
*Digital camera or cell phone with the ability to take pictures
*Stiletto or Awl
*Optional - Pattern Ease
FABRIC
You will get a specific fabric assignment for this workshop based on the Game of Improv rules. If you want to be prepared, I would take a serious look at your stash and make sure you have solids fabrics that represent the entire color wheel as well as neutrals in all values and all intensities. It is okay if you have gaps in your palette, but you will have to adapt your strategy for using color accordingly.
Please WASH and DRY all fabric that you will be using for this workshop. I know
you are going to ignore this request, but washed fabric is BETTER for our purposes. If
you immediately remove the fabric from the dryer you can fold it without having to iron.
