This foot is designed to feed fabrics that do't ordinarily move easily under the presser foot - pile fabrics, such as velvet, velveteen and corduroy; slipper fabrics such as satin, sateen and silk; "sticky" fabrics such as vinyl; and layered fabrics, such as quilts.  
This foot is also useful for ensuring that matched stripes and plaids don't shift as they are stitched.
