Machine Quilting: Rulers and Feathers

Carolyn is going to pack a lot into two days of free hand quilting.

Day One:  Will cover the basics of freehand quilting, and evolve into using rulers with your domestic or sit down quilting machine.  She'll cover the mechanics of using rulers, and you'll practice  stitching in the ditch with a ruler, piano keys, spines for feathers and straight cross hatching.

Day Two:  Introduction to feathers.  You'll primarily be using paper and pencil, but you will have time to practice each feather type:  Molar feathers, humpback feathers, fronds, ferns and formal feathers.

If you're looking to develop your freehand quilting skills, this class is for you.  This class will be geared toward the beginning quilter, but all are welcome to attend!

Requirements:
Machine, needs to be able to lower feed dogs. Please know how to thread your machine, fill a bobbin, lower the feed dogs, and change the feet. Worktable that attaches to your machine, such as a sew steady table, or sew-ezi table. At a minimum the small table that might have come with your machine. The larger the surface the better. Throat plate, single hole. Open toe quilting foot Ruler foot New needle Thread 40 or 50 weight thread to contrast with your material. 4 or more quilt sandwiches about 18” or 20” square, fabric should read as a plain color, make one of these as a 4 patch with a 2” or 3” border. Squares should be about 4” each so you would have a 12” square or bigger. The 4 patch quilt will be used for the ruler work. Sketch pad and pencil. Bernina ruler kit or ¼” thick straight ruler, ¼” thick curved ruler, can be a larger circle, wave ruler or arc. Something to grip your fabric when quilting. Examples: gloves, Handi Quilter Sweet Spots, Martelli quilting pads, or Grip and Stitch, rubber shelf liner (small pieces) or gripper tape on the bottom of the ruler. My personal favorites are Sweet Spots or the Martelli version, and rubber shelf liner under the ruler.
